codeman38:

Was just realizing something while reading this post about nonverbal communication by youneedacat.

There are autistic people whose expressions I can read easily in video footage, but are impossible for me to read in still images.

And even with completely neurotypical people, I find that…

The tests I suggested performing involved inducing real emotions in real people (both those familiar to the person and not) and then measuring actual body-based emotional responses to such emotions in autistic people, to completely cut out the artificial things like photos, black and white photos, even video, and to cut out the thing where you have to be able to name the emotion to be perceived as picking up on it.

And there’s a lot else wrong with the tests I’ve seen performed on autistic people, but I’m too tired to say it all right now. The researcher I talked to actually has done a lot of research on inducing stress in people, so then they could measure how autistic people physically respond to stress in other people for example.
