Argh I’m definitely learning this writer’s biases.
He has also referred to some foods as being referred to these days as “foodlike substances”. I attempted to trace the name of that, and found a video by the guy who seems to have created that term. Who also said that “the healthcare crisis is a euphemism for the catastrophe of the American diet”. Which is very similar to what this author is claiming.
This stuff makes me really really nervous. Blaming food for every damn thing that goes wrong with health. Which then can lead to orthorexia as you try to eat only the “right” kind of foods, in an attempt to ward off diseases that, if you were going to get them, you’ll likely get them anyway. I’ve spent time around people like this, who get really really obsessed with food and try to make everyone around them equally obsessed with food.
I really like all other aspects of this book, and I can see the author actually holding back at times and not unleashing his full opinions on stuff like this in an attempt to appear unbiased. But I already know what’s under the surface, and a lot of it can turn very ugly. And it makes me very edgy and uncomfortable to read this stuff, as a recovering orthorexic, because I know how fast it can turn to obsessing over every little thing you eat to make sure it’s pure enough, until you are starving, and (this wasn’t part of my orthorexia but it’s part of a lot of people’s) looking down on people who refuse to do the same. Just makes me squirm with uneasiness.
