my parents never believed me when i would tell them this. it happens all the time though.

Yep happens to me too.

I actually had this horrible experience with a neurologist once. I told him I kept forgetting how to urinate. And he told me that it’s impossible to forget how to urinate because urination isn’t voluntary. He also told my mother, who thinks in pictures, that it’s not possible to think outside of words. So he wasn’t just a jerk, he was an uninformed jerk. On a large number of issues. I was glad to see the back of him.

So of course I went on getting tons of urinary tract infections because I was forgetting how to urinate and he wouldn’t refer me for treatment because supposedly if I just stopped thinking about the problem it would go away. Tell that to the infections.

Anyway. The thing about urination not being voluntary? Not true. If it was a totally involuntary action, people would be pissing their pants everywhere and the entire world would be wearing diapers. It’s voluntary.

So years later it got to the point I could barely pee at all. I was petrified but I went to a urologist. And he did a bunch of tests. And it turned out my urethra was spastic. So it was snapping shut and I couldn’t open it. So I now have an implant that electronically signals the muscle to stop spasming so I can pee.

(And I have to get surgery to replace the battery next month. Yay? I hate butt surgery.)

So yeah people will say it’s impossible to forget how to do these things. But it happens to me all the time. Including breathing.

In fact it was a huge problem whenever my dentist would give me nitrous. I’d forget how to breathe and he’d act like I was doing it on purpose, and start shouting at me about how I could breathe if I wanted to breathe. Like my favorite thing in the world is to stop breathing while a guy is working on my mouth. Yeah.

I’ve had it other times, too, but it was the worst with nitrous.
