[This is a spliced-together scan of a painting. It was painted with fingers so most of the “brushstrokes” are large. It’s a nighttime scene at the base of a large redwood tree. The tree is painted in dark brown, dark purple, and blue, with occasional light purple parts. Beside the tree is wavy mist in green, blue, and purple with white parts. What looks like the full moon is peeking out from behind the tree. On the ground in the roots is a yellow stylized human curled up with a light green stylized cat.]

This is the same painting of the Mother Tree that I posted a photograph of earlier. But the photograph was so bad that I went to the trouble to scan it and manipulate the colors until they resembled the actual painting as well as I could manage. Since I scan it in pieces, and it’s only a small scanner, this is spliced together from scans and not all parts fit together exactly right. I tried to eliminate as many obvious seams as possible but there’s always some left.

Anyway, as I said earlier, this painting is more about the feel of the place than exact details. I am really happy that I managed to do it well enough to give someone who’s never met the tree the exact sense I intended of the place, and two people who’ve met the tree a sense that I did it really accurately. Up until the very last minute, the painting looked so completely horrible that I almost gave up and did something else. And then suddenly all my “mistakes” turned out to be right after all. This is only really the second painting that I’ve done with a plan in mind so it was rather terrifying. I mean I didn’t know what I was going to paint, but I wanted it to be something about what it feels like to be around that tree, and that was enough to intimidate me.
