insicknessinhealth:

‘Oh I wish I could be like you and stay home from school, being sick must be great’

I have heard this from literally all my friends. Shut the fuck up and think before you open your mouth. The sick life is not a happy one and has no fairy tale ending.

O_o

I wish I had a job. I wouldn’t want to stay home from work all the time if I had a choice. I am kind of a workaholic and work would be very fulfilling to me if I could do it.

I cope pretty well with my limitations. I am not miserable all the time. But given a choice I’d rather not be bedridden or housebound.

The worst I got though was a nurse who told me I was lucky to have gastroparesis because I kept losing weight. From starvation. Which would have killed me without a feeding tube. I just went another week without eating when my feeding tube got a clog and then fell out. I’ve spent much longer than that living on nothing but broth and tiny amounts of grits, or nothing at all but IV fluids. There is nothing good about losing weight because you can’t eat. It’s life threatening (you burn muscle, including your heart potentially). It’s unpleasant. It’s unhealthy. Don’t ever tell a sick person you wish you could have (gastroparesis, cancer, AIDS, whatever) so you could be thin, it makes us want to slap sense into you.

As I said, I’m actually not too unhappy with my life, but telling me I am lucky to be sick because of something you perceive as wonderful (not working, being in bed all the time) is a good way to get me really pissed off at you. Try to remember that it’s not just the bad things we get out of. I can’t go to work. But I also can’t usually get out to the art program where I can paint all I want to ever paint. It’s not like I just get out of the bad stuff, I also have to not do a lot of good stuff because I don’t have the energy, I’m in too much pain, or my brain sort of shuts off and won’t let me move or think or perceive anything. I miss out on lots of the fun stuff too. Being sick is not vacation.
