dduane:

Somebody put a note in my ask box ages ago (I thought) about whether I had a favorite desktop wallpaper. I can’t find that note now: possibly in trying to answer it, it got eaten. (WHY does that happen so often, Tumblr?)
Anyway, this is the answer: an overview of the area described in ch. 13 of A Wizard of Mars where Nita and Aurilelde fight it out over who really knows how to use Mars’s planetary kernel. Aurilelde’s move is to drop a whole ancient ocean’s worth of water on top of (a) Nita and (b) the surrounding terrain at Oceanidum Mons. She quickly finds that this move was, shall we say, insufficient.
The scene itself was designed using Martian terrain data from the Mars Global Surveyor and built in Terragen 2.0, and took me damn near forever — getting the clouds right at this perspective and this particular height is a bitch. As a result, this image is my desktop’s wallpaper about 90% of the time.
Clicking on the image will lead you to the wallpaper’s storage space at my Box.com account. (The size is 1920x1200 px, if anyone was wondering.) Do feel free to grab a copy if you like.
