I think it’s kind of true that some people erase certain kinds of autistic people

Like, some autistic people don’t use symbolic language. That’s a real thing. Not just something relatives make up because they can’t be bothered to listen to autistic communication.

It is a real thing. It’s different from “doesn’t communicate at all,” but real. (Ignoring the difference can be really dangerous!)

Yeah what pisses me off about it is that people treat it like “If you’d just offer your child an AAC system then they’d learn to type/use picture symbols/etc.” Which is inaccurate and unfair.

But I hear it tossed around a lot towards parents who say their child doesn’t speak or type. And even if the parent mistakenly says their kid doesn’t communicate at all, this is not the proper response to it.
