You can’t teach survivors that their body is their own while defining what recovery is for them.

That means:

-you don’t decide that recovery includes having sex again

-you don’t decide recovery means therapy

-you don’t decide whether recovery means letting people touch them again

-you don’t decide recovery means being able to cope with triggers instead of avoiding them

-you don’t decide that recovery includes stopping or starting ANY behaviours unless THEY say so

Or you are NOT giving them autonomy.

For me the biggest one is the one where people say recovery means therapy.

The worst abuse I’ve had in my life (of every possible category if abuse at different times, sexual, physical, emotional, etc.) was in the psychiatric system. I’m not going back. Ever. That’s not a problem I have to overcome in order to recover fully, that’s keeping myself safe both from triggers and from further abuse. Because abuse is built into that system, it’s a common feature, not a side issue that happens because of bad apples. I don’t care if someone uses the system though, so they need to stop caring that I don’t.

Especially when I went to ptsd support online and didn’t last an hour because everyone told me that by avoiding therapy I clearly didn’t value myself enough to want to get better. No explanation helped. I left completely distraught.
