➸ Making Room for Other Roots: don't erase ableism

I just want to say that disabled/mentally ill/terminally ill queers can now have their spouse be their legal advocate and representative instead of an immediate family member who might treat them like shit because of queerness, etc. and they won’t be affected by HIPAA laws,…

What scares me is that I still can’t have people declared my family who are my family.

Because they’re not my partners. One is an honorary second mother (we are considering adoption as a desperate measure to be considered each other’s next of kin). The other is an honorary twin, for lack of a better term. (No adoption for that.)

They are my family and it’s hard if not impossible to make them considered such because they’re not blood relations and they’re not ever going to marry me because we don’t have that kind of relationship.
And we are all disabled so it matters a lot. They are both power of attorney for healthcare. But one has still been ordered out of my hospital room while my roommates husband could stay.
