“You really have no potential to have a good life if there’s some fundamental difference between you and everyone else and you don’t understand what it is. There’s no way you’re going to integrate yourself with everyone else in ignorance.”

Because being indistinguishable from peers is the goal, amirite?

Ugh, JER, shut the fuck up.

Even if that’s not the goal, I have to say.

I had a decent life and had friends as an adult before I was diagnosed. My husband is not diagnosed with anything and he has friends and a good life (and a wife, and a well-paying job) and he doesn’t “integrate" at all. (Periodically he tells me he should start cultivating some eccentricities. I always respond with “START?“) My parents have no diagnoses and they are definitely not neurotypical; same with my brothers. Note that I am the only one out of the six of us who has an actual diagnosis.

In essence, as long as you can figure out what kinds of things will help and you don’t need actual official accommodations or something, you don’t actually need to know what the “fundamental difference” is.

I have a better life than I ever imagined I would, even if it’s not what everyone considers a great life. Yeah shut up everyone who tells me I can’t be happy because I’m on welfare and I should shut up about how good I have it compared to before.

And I completely don’t blend in at all. Nobody ever looks at me and sees a nondisabled person. I get a lot of help. But I am happy. So screw the entire way of thinking that says I have to learn to blend in or whatever before I can be ok.
