Trying to find the right words: Restricting an autistic child's diet is dangerous

fortheloveoflanguages:

josiahd:

One really common purported cure for autism is to force a child to eat a very restricted diet. GFCF is one common diet, but there are others.

This is really dangerous.

One of the major dangers autistic adults face is starvation.

We can starve to death…

I can attest to this, having dealt with starvation from other causes AND a hugely restrictive diet AT THE SAME TIME. Not good at all.

The restrictive diet was… vegan, Candida diet, and minus a few other foods too. The quack had convinced my family that Candida (which exists in everyone’s body, so it’s easy to test for and lie saying “see that means you’re infected systemically”, when actually it takes a severe immune problem on the order of AIDS to allow that to happen) and food allergies were implicated in the neuromuscular clusterfuck and autism. I think maybe GFCF too. And I definitely developed orthorexia.
