Actual question, if you are chronically ill (lupus, fibromyalgia, RA, IC, etc) would you have a child if you knew they were going to wither away in the pain that you are in everyday?

Yes. If I wanted a child, that is.

My family is full of great people who happen to have genetic conditions, many of them painful.

There’s no way I’d say it’s better someone not exist at all than have what I have. Like I’m glad I’m here, and those are the only two options – either exist, with all these problems, or don’t exist at all. If far rather exist.

So if I was having a child, I wouldn’t avoid it on the basis that I’d pass on my genes. Because it’s not for me to say someone else is better off not existing, than being sick. My family has handled chronic illness and chronic pain for generations, and I’m not sorry any of us exist.

No, it’s an incredibly hard existence. I wouldn’t begrudge anyone that choice, though.

  17. crowspice answered: No, because if I can learn to fight and have a good life, so can they. It’s demeaning to say they can’t, even before they’re born.
