Emperor Tamarins

These animals look quite distinguished with their long whiskers and regal name. The emperor tamarin dwells in evergreen and broadleaf forests across Brazil and Peru. They typically live in groups of four, usually with one female and three males. They run or walk as quadropeds across the forest floor, but are also very agile as they leap from branch to branch.

They keep to their chosen territories, which they patrol regularly, and defend against other tamarins. They call loudly to announce their presence, particularly near territorial boundaries. At night, they sleep in large isolated trees, near other group members.

Emperor tamarins are thought to be named after Emperor Wilhelm II, the emperor of Germany from 1888-1918, due to their long white mustaches.
