1. APPEARANCE / PERSONAL HABITS

d/ Is youthful for her age, in looks, dress, behavior and tastes.

I definitely look younger…

I’ve read stuff by her. She basically talked to a bunch of women diagnosed with AS and came up with that. It’s not like they’re the diagnostic criteria or the end all and be all of what the diagnosis means.

They’re just a list of stuff one
particular woman decided was important.

Plus.

I read a study once.

They were trying to differentiate autistic from nonautistic traits. They had people rate autistic and nonautistic kids on a whole long list of traits. From one to three.

They expected that on a trait whee autistic people got a one, nonautistic people would get a three, and vice versa.

They were wrong.

On any given trait, nonautistic people were likely to get a two, while autistic people got a one OR a three.

Autistic people tended to both extremes. Nonautistic people tended to be average.

This fits in with my theory that autism involves a limited set of resources, but that in any given area, each of us uses those resources differently. Plus any given autistic person may alternate in how they use those resources (for instance, understanding words sometimes without understanding vocal tones, and other times understanding vocal tones without words).

So having the opposite of an autistic trait… is often an autistic trait itself. And it’s surprising how few people are aware of this. .

(I’d noticed it early on because me and my brother are such opposites, but it was awhile before I read the study.)

So if you don’t have every trait listed, it doesn’t mean you’re not autistic. At all.
