Lots of Chicken of the Woods showing in my local woodlands at the moment, some of these are as big as dinner plates! Chickens are of course an edible mushroom, but these ones are growing on Yew stumps. Yew trees are a poisonous species, so there is a good chance they contain some of the toxins found within the wood of their host.
I haven’t read a definitive study of this and Internet opinion seems divided, so is it worth the risk? If anybody has knowledge of this then please feel free to enlighten me.
Get out there and get snapping, happy hunting!As tasty as they are, I wouldn’t take any chances there. No idea whether they might absorb toxins from the stumps, but it’s probably not worth the risk. :(
