Miso Head: Why I don't like reading blogs by medical professionals very often.

youneedacat:

Oh FFS medical professionals, get it right. This is why I don’t read your fucking blogs.

Yes, I understand that for people who are truly dying and would probably rather be dying, the ICU is basically a torture chamber.

But.

You don’t help disabled people by portraying the…

Thanks. But be really sure you research what the various options mean, before you make any major decisions about your life based on something I say. While it’s true that disabled people generally adjust to our lives, it’s also true that these professionals are reacting partly to a very real situation in medical care. The problem for disabled people is there is, in current society, pretty much no way to stipulate “I want to die in this situation but not in that one”, that can’t be somehow twisted, consciously or not, to ensure our early deaths at a time we wouldn’t want to die.

But it’s such a serious decision that I wouldn’t want someone thinking they knew all there was to know about it from my tumblr posts. Just keep in mind that some things that are the most common things you hear in these discussions, have so much anti disabled people bias, that it’s really damn hard to get an unbiased opinion about the situations that really matter. They’ll sometimes say disability is different… But sometimes it isn’t, and sometimes their words say one thing and their actions say another. But on life and death, it’s important to ensure nobody is making your decisions for you (as in, make sure your choices are your own, whether you appoint decision makers or not).
