Often I notice cats handle disability better than humans do. Because humans have built up a lot of mess in our heads that makes it harder than it actually is if you just take it for what it is and get on with things. Not that cats are 100% thrilled with it, but they adapt faster and better in most cases. (Often it’s the humans watching them that make a bigger deal out of it than the cat does, sometimes with tragic results for the cat.) Humans who do less brooding on the matter and have fewer weird prejudices and preconceptions, tend to adapt better too.

This is so cute!

Epic kitten play-battles are epic!

Yes they’re totally adorable.

Oh my god they are so adorable!

Cats do seem especially good at handling disabilities. I’ve seen so many cats with various issues who just don’t seem to mind them at all, and come up with so many ways of adapting.

It seems harder for rats. Like Jamie who just died, after living for months feeling completely happy even though he couldn’t use his back legs - he was really the exception regarding being happy with mobility issues. It seems like most rats get extremely stressed and depressed about their hind end paralysis and can’t find new ways to eat, etc. I think that might be because rats just don’t have very long lifespans - by the time hind end paralysis sets in, they’re probably not going to make it that much longer, their bodies just deteriorate so much after 2 years.

Yeah and rats may be as prone to over thinking as we are, for all we know! But whatever it is, the terrible thing about having rats for me was how fast they died. :-(
