Oh my god. The dirt thing. My mom used to use COMET on me, thinking it would get it off. It never did. (My skin was both darker and more varied in pigment then than it is now.)

Yowch. :( I’m actually glad my Mamaw never thought of that one, because she did love her Comet. Chock full of chlorine bleach. :( That’s pretty scary.

Yeah, I get more obvious varied pigmentation the more of a tan I get. And the darker blotches tan much darker than the rest. It sounds like maybe your skin responds similarly.

Yeah. If I’m out in the sun and not on meds that cause sun sensitivity, I tan very dark (and uneven) compared to what you’d expect for my current paleness. Dark enough to cause trouble with border guards. And my neck and elbows go darker.

And yeah I didn’t even know comet was not supposed to be used on skin until I told that to someone as an adult. All I know is it was very painful and smelly.
