Of all the places to idealize the past, cfconfessions?
You do realize that the mutation would not just vanish? Because heterozygote advantage. We’d just die early and horribly.
And… nice of you to assume that’d be a decent thing to inflict on all of the rest of us too.
Holy fucking crap somehow I missed that one.
I think the person actually said pretty much that dying early and horribly is better than living and being sick.
I hope they realize that they are not just affecting themselves by saying that.
They’re confirming in the eyes of people who are already prejudiced, that is better to be dead than to have a severe illness.
And that has an effect on other people.
I’ve had people decide it was better for me to die than to be severely ill. Better to die of pneumonia or starvation than to live with a feeding tube.
Their ideas don’t come from nowhere.
Every time a disabled person says it would be better without modern medicine because then we’d all die…people LISTEN and form opinions and hurt other disabled people, or condemn us to death.
Not a good thing to go around promoting.
Saying things like this in public is not consequence free.
And making such a decision on behalf of every single person who would for without modern medicine is a generally shitty thing to do. Even if it’s just in your imagination. Personally wishing you didn’t exist is one thing, but this is wishing a large number of people didn’t exist. And the rest of us might have a thing or two to say about that.
Personally I have severe chronic illnesses and I’m grateful for every day of life I have. I inherited some of them from my mother. I know she feels the same. So does my father. Both of them have gone through grueling surgeries to get as much out of their lives as they can.
But both my mother and I have had to fight against medical professionals who thought our lives weren’t worth saving. And I’ve been directly told by random people that I shouldn’t exist, or that society is worse off because medical technology has “gone too far” and allowed people like me to live, rather than “survival of the fittest”. Usually people who want to go back to the hell when vaccines didn’t exist and you could expect a lot of your children to die.
And just… don’t get me started. But I totally reject the idea that this is an okay thing to say. I mean people have the right to say whatever they want. But there’s responsibilities too, and I think it’s a bad idea to run around promoting ideas like this. It’s not a victimless attitude.
And now I’m going to shut up for a minute because I keep drifting into weird dreams.
