cavesofaltamira:

a friendly reminder that ableism is still ableism, no matter if it’s towards a physical disability or a mental one

people with physical handicaps are still told that they are “faking it” (a lot of people don’t believe certain things like fibromyalgia are real, or that…

I have a wide variety of disability types. And while I understand the reason for believing in genetic disability oppression, that’s not how my gut thinks.

My gut sees me as experiencing multiple interlocking oppressions.

Physical disability, cognitive disability, psychiatric disability, chronic illness, chronic pain, sensory disability, etc. All different, as far as my gut goes. (My gut will break it down even further, but I won’t go there right now.)

I understand the idea of one basic disability oppression. And I support that, for many reasons.

But I still feel as if disability is multiple interlocking oppressions for me. Not one. And I think that’s just as valid. Both ways of looking at it are important in different situations.
