realsocialskills:

Hello, I was wondering, how do you guys feel about the usage of “derp”, “herp derp”, “duh” and the like?…

I should add some disabled people flap their hands on their chests exactly like that and that’s fine is they’re just naturally doing that. Same for noises that sound similar to duh. But that’s entirely different.

It scared me when I realized my voice often has a vague undertone similar to that tone of voice people use.

But then it made sense something that used to happen.

Someone in conversation would repeat something I said in that voice.

I’d lash out at them for mocking me.

They’d say it was just how I talk.

And this was not malicious people. One of them was my dad. It took me a long time to come to terms with that part of my voice. It’s subtle sometimes and obvious others, I can bring it under full control only by tightening my throat to the point of severe pain.

  2. jimmyappleseed answered: When they’re said in a joking manner or maybe with a smile, it doesn’t rub me the wrong way. But other than that, it tends to.
  3. slightmayhem answered: knowyourmeme.com/memes/h… Without a doubt, it’s a slur.

  9. kaihugstrees answered: “derp” and the like are definitely ableist, as they’re mocking how some disabled people speak.
  10. namelesstunnelgrub said: “Derp” and the like originated with captioning pictures of disabled people considered to look like r-words, and I haven’t seen it used much differently since. I think it’s ableist.
  11. icryyoumercy answered: … I guess those are all words that really, really depend on context. I’d say if you don’t feel it was meant in an ableist way, it’s not.
