Black folk can figure out if a person is shady or not real quick.

Our culture tells us to look at body language and non-verbal cues just to understand a casual conversation, you don’t think we can’t use those same skills to…

I’ve had to explain this to folks before. And I usually fall back on ~intuition, but it’s deeper than that. It’s more like y’all have explained. You just develop another sense. Because so much of our lives are impacted by outside forces that are specifically looking to harm us, you figure out, eventually “nah, son. I’m good” as a defense mechanism.

This all sounds very, very familiar from my own NDN perspective too. Part of it has to do with who is even expected to learn to read and interpret whose body language at all, but a lot of these folks really do seem pretty awful at reading each other’s. :/ Besides the basic cultural differences there, I guess a lot is from not having the same longterm reasons to watch some other people like hawks. Not to mention the mismatches between what somebody’s mouth and actual body language are saying. Talk about spotting all kinds of shady without even having to try that hard… *shudder*

Same with being disabled. And my particular disability only hones that ability further.
