warlocksexalways:

Maybe that’s why I find myself relating more to autistic self-advocacy conversations? It seems like a lot of conversations surrounding mental illness are always about how you need to try your hardest to get better, and trust the professionals, and etc etc

Probably because exactly that.

Mental illness conversations by people with mental illness tend to come in two forms:

“It’s always an illness just like diabetes only neurological, is a chemical imbalance, meds and therapy are the only way to deal with it, and if you think otherwise you’re [in denial / not really ill like I am / harming everyone with REAL mental illness / romanticizing / bad]. And don’t criticize psychiatry, meds, or therapy ever or you are an evil person trying to keep people from getting better.”

“It’s always rooted in childhood trauma, you shouldn’t take meds but maybe should go to a "dissident psychiatrist” who has just as many power issues as any other psychiatrist, maybe it’s okay to take meds, maybe you’re weak if you take meds, but there’s no such thing as neurological variation among human beings because if there was then we’d all have meds forced on us.“

Yeah those are both caricatures. But I don’t even want anything to do with the real versions. They all piss me off because they have no room for my experiences.
