cheshicat: Forests have four levels and ferns belong to the lowest of all, the aptly named forest floor.  Ferns are very simple, being one of the oldest vascular plants.  They appear as far back as the Carboniferous period (360 million years ago) and many modern species had already emerged by the Cretaceous (around 145 million years ago).   Storm King Art Center, NY
