Map of San Mateo County, California. I was born pretty much in the middle of that big green area. Near one of the unincorporated towns but not in it. (The actual place has a population of less than sixty today, less back then, and isn’t written on the map.) People assume the Bay Area is all urban/suburban but they’re wrong. There’s also small towns and things even smaller than small towns. (I think where I was born is technically a settlement, not a town.) And most of that county seems to be the rural Coast Range, even though you usually only hear about the cities.
