illdesignyourlife:

I went to Big Basin alone this past weekend.

I sat on a bench and sketched “The Animal Tree,” known for its burls, a condition that occurs when something naturally stressful happens to the tree: injury, infection, etc. I answered questions and heard comments from parents, children, utter strangers. “You’re really talented.” Thank you. “You’re so good.” Thank you. “Is being an artist your profession?” Yes. “That’s great, you’re fantastic.” Thank you very much. “How long have you been sketching for?” About 20 minutes. “I meant in your life.” Since childhood. “That’s awesome.” Thanks. “Beautiful sweetie.” Thank you. “Get out of the way you’re blocking her view.” It’s ok, the tree’s not going anywhere. “Are you sure?” Yeah, otherwise I’m in a lot of trouble. “Well good luck then.” Thanks. “Thumbs up!” Thanks.

It was a big self-esteem booster. I remember being a child and seeing someone older than me sketch in a national park and being in utter wonder, of course asking too many questions and getting too close to the artist. I wanted to be that someday, and now I am.

How ironic that sketching the tree’s stresses relieved my own.

This trip was cleansing.
