It’s my opinion that most people construct their lovely structures of mental widgets (I love that image), precisely because the real world is so damn complicated, and they can’t/don’t want to deal with it. Applying simpler principles to the real world ends up with all kinds of ambiguous, contradictory, or even paradoxical situations that make many people so uncomfortable that they will run off to their mental worlds without even an acknowledgement that they’re leaving the real for the theoretical.
