What gets me about all this ornamental work is that it’s on a part of the door so seldom seen unless the door was left open all the time, which seems a bit improbable. And yet there it is, ready to be admired for what, two seconds? during every open-and-close cycle.
The first thought is Why?
The second thought is Why Not?

YES. This is why so many things.

Also I feel like things made that way are so much more interesting. They’re made so that parts of them nobody will ever see at beautiful. Because someone was committed to making ALL of it beautiful. Like sculptures with amazing detail work on the inside even though nobody will see more than the tiniest fraction of that inside. That to me shows someone is really committed to making something look amazing, and that sort of commitment is visible even when those parts are not visible. It’s the difference between something where the inside details stop where your eyes stop, and something where the details go all the way through. And you can tell.
