Disability is seen as a male thing too much, too. Except for dissociation and psychogenic seizures, my disabilities are associated with males. With young boys, usually. Definitely not with philanthropic female motherly middle-aged high bi femmes who think frandshap is magic. I’m just a cuckoo…

Reblogging because I understand and agree.

TBH, I’m not sure the male stereotypes of ADHD or autism are all that accurate for boys and men (and other male-bodied folks) either.  Like, ADHD boys aren’t all hyper, and autistic boys can care about people and feelings and have special interests in people rather than trains.  But we have mental images of what a male with autism is like, whether it’s Sheldon from Big Bang Theory or Max from Mary and Max or someone else entirely.

I have yet to see a middle-aged woman character whose entire purpose in life was to care for others, and did it in an autistic way.  Or an ADHD woman who struggles with her friends’ and neighbors’ expectations of how to keep a house and raise children, wondering, “why is nothing ever easy?”  When are we going to see characters like this?  Are we going to have to write these books and movie scripts ourselves?

Jordan in Real Genius is “hyperkinetic”, an old term for hyperactive. She was based on a real woman. My ex used to compare me to her. I liked her character.
