(Bottle of mestinon, pyridostigmine bromide syrup.)
This stuff has made my life much better and may have ultimately saved it.
It’s a long story. But it does something involving acetylcholine that allows my muscles to function without going limp. We still font know exactly what my neuromuscular condition is but it resembles either myasthenia gravis or hereditary myasthenia.
Anyway I’m able to get out of bed sometimes now. I can stand for more extended periods than before. Every single thing I do is easier in ways I had forgotten about.
It’s not something you’d ever want to take if you didn’t need it. Overdoses are nasty and have to be treated with atropine which is poisonous in itself. Even taking a little too much gave me unpleasant and scary side effects.
But if you do need it it’s amazing. And if my mom hadn’t been put on it for similar symptoms I’d never have tried it. Because I test negative on the most common myasthenia test. (Which people with the hereditary kind usually test negative on. As do some with the autoimmune kind.)
Oh and I need oxygen much less often than I used to.
