Companies who are generally allowed that much leeway because the very same rich people are “fiscally conservative and socially liberal” and voted for politicians who let said companies do scummy things

I remember when my income was $534 a month. And I would try to go shopping and an upper middle class friend would say things like, “I hope it’s not a large chain store.”

Meanwhile I was just hoping I could afford food.

I couldn’t explain how I felt when they made their frequent remarks about large chain stores. Argued with me over the issue of affordability. Made me feel like I wasn’t good enough somehow. But I still can’t explain. One part humiliation one part anger, I think.
