➸ Social skills for autonomous people: About musical instruments
Serious musicians often experience their instruments as an extension of their body. In any case, their instruments are usually deeply personal things.
High-level instruments also tend to…
Also… My violin is not expensive or high quality. It is however one of a kind. It has a history. It’s a hundred years old. It has lived with me since I was six years old. It has meaning for me that no other instrument has.
I would be devastated if someone broke it. I would not trade it for the fanciest most high quality violin in the world. Because to me it is like a person. You don’t trade a person for another because of the quality in the way they are physically built. You don’t get rid of someone because they’re not expensive and designed by the best. And my relationship to my violin is a relationship as much as my relationship to a very old friend is a relationship. It may be my oldest friend.
Even when you stop a relationship for some reason, there’s no replacing it. And destroying someone else’s relationship in purpose is generally considered the height of cruelty.
So… All this goes for amateurs with seemingly crappy instruments just as well as for professionals with amazing talent and instruments. The relationship between a musician and their instrument is not based on level of talent, only level of ability to be receptive.
