Dinosaurs, because they were real once a really long time ago, and that’s so incredibly mysterious to think about… how things were like before people were here. I often wish there were more sci fi and fantasy stories written about prehistoric times.
ETA: Erm, no offense to the dragons who may be reading.
Sometimes I wonder if stories of dragons are actually stories of dinosaurs or terror birds. Not that I think humans were around (well there’s a really super slim chance that the very first hominids, the very last terror birds, but very slim).
But humans may well have instinctive shadowy memories going back that far, just like we have instinctive fears of spiders and snakes. And we now know that even prairie dogs could talk, so is it that impossible that we could have some very tiny stray threads of oral/communicative traditions handed down from before humans evolved into humans, combined with those shadowy instinctive fears?
Or they could just be wholly mythical beasts like so many others. But you never actually KNOW with things like that, how much is myth, how much is instinctual memories and fears from who knows how far back, and exactly how long animals have been telling each other stories.
