Yeah in my current literature MOOC course I feel like the professor may actually believe that. Not because of anything he’s said. Just because of the reading list. Like “dark and gritty and cynical == realistic and oh so deep”. And that’s not how I see the world. At all.

Honestly I think the deepest things in the world are deeply good things. And whether or not a story has a happy ending, it doesn’t strike me as deep unless that deep goodness shines through somewhere.

Like Madeleine L'Engle and Diane Duane and Michael Ende. Whether you like everything in their stories or not they have an extreme depth to them that I’ve never seen in a book that mistakes cynicism for depth.
