Great news for schools and kids is bad news at Fox. Schools in high-poverty areas can now offer free school lunches to all students. This will help alleviate child hunger, improve academic achievement and saves the school money by decreasing administrative costs. 

But Fox News hears this and thinks that it’s somehow bad news. We’ll let the guest explain their reasoning: 

The problem we have … [with] poor children right now is obesity, and not the fact that they’re not getting enough calories. 

You fucking bags of dicks. It’s not that they’re “not getting enough calories,” it’s that the calories they ARE getting are not of any nutritional value. how do I know? I was a fucking poor kid you fox news assholes. There was a lot of mac n cheese, and you’d think I’d be getting vit c from the butter and protein from the milk you put in the boxed mac n cheese? NO. We made it with water cos we couldn’t afford milk and butter. There was popcorn cos popcorn is cheap. And a lot of fucking hotdogs. So many hotdogs I can’t even SMELL boiled hotdogs and not barf now days.  If it wasn’t for free breakfast and free lunch, I would NOT have had anything other than that shit for entire YEARS of my life. yes I was a fat kid. A lot of the food we ate was full of sodium, highly fatty and highly caloric, but it filled tiny little bellies. You see, I have four younger siblings. So, I got the school lunch and the ones who were not of school age got popcorn and bread with maybe peanut butter, or maybe jam on it. Fuck you fucking assholes ok

Plus if you’re not getting enough food or balance of nutrients in the food you are getting, on a regular basis, your body will try to hold onto every bit of energy it can. Just trying to survive.

The fat shaming is bad enough when it’s not being used to suggest that poor people are too fat as a group to even need better access to nutritious food. (For kids, even, hard as it is to believe the cartoon villain approach there.) Attacking people over their size or using it as an excuse for unequal treatment is never cool. But, it makes me particularly angry when the actual physiological effects of food insecurity, and also the flood of stress hormones from living in poverty, then also get used against poor people.

I still have food insecurity issues. And I can tell you—most of the people I have ever known who were seriously poor had hard, fat stomachs because that’s where “stress fat” from stress hormones builds up. but all we can do is bitch about their “bad” habits, how “stupid” they are, and why they don’t deserve ANYTHING at all because they’re poor and fat and
