(Very slight TMI) leg pain WTF is this?

So any time I bear down like I’m going to the bathroom  (that’s the only TMI in the post), pain shoots down my left leg, starting near where the top of my butt and hip meet, shooting down the back of the leg, on the left-hand side of the back of the leg.  It’s very sharp, very painful, and I can feel it shoot downwards, but it leaves an aching behind afterwards that’s duller, but still pretty sharp.  And that aching hasn’t stopped yet even though this started half an hour ago.  This happens no matter what position I’m sitting it at the time and is way out of proportion.

What is this?  A ligament or something, or sciatica, or…?

ETA:  It also happens when I laugh.  Basically anything that creates that particular sort of pressure I don’t know the word for, like laughing or bearing down or coughing.
