➸ Musings of Ade: Did anyone else...
…not have a regressive phase until puberty?
I’m not sure if what’s going on right now (I’m a senior in COLLEGE, but this started about a year ago) is a regressive phase or what, but if so, it’s the first. So not until well after puberty, for me.
…you…
Similar here. I am not entirely sure how to sort that out from changes in expectations as you get older and just plain burnout, though. I never got back completely to “me-normal” after a couple of rather spectacular burnout episodes (and a bunch of smaller ones), in my teens and 20s. There was plenty of stuff going on there, but yeah.
It’s extremely frequent. The rate of autistic people who have a “regressive” phase in puberty ranges from around 1/6 to 1/3 (depending, it seems, on whether you count it if they get the skills back afterwards). The rate of people who have a “regressive” phase in infancy is lower than that. So that means there’s a lot of people out there who didn’t “regress” until puberty.
Wow this explains so much of what’s going on with me right now too. I’m kinda self diagnosed (with my mum saying “I reckon you’re on the spectrum” after checking out the autistic community on facebook or ssomething). I used to have heaps of meltdowns and “tantrums” when I was aged 5-8 (and my family were gonna get me officially diagnosed) and then it was like all my symptoms disappeared for a bit (except the ones I was able to hide like lack of social skills and a little bit of sensory sensitivity and just saying I’m a but “clumsy”) but starting about last year everything’s getting harder and harder and half of all language I hear I barely comprehend and I’m stimming a whole lot more and I’m having sensory overloads and shut downs pretty much at least twice a week and I’m going non-vocal more and more often and holy shit everything is just getting a lot harder.
Sorry for adding my stuff or whatever but just wow
I wrote this specifically for people dealing with what you’re dealing with:
