Concerning the “sane person fakes insanity to be admitted to a psychiatric hospital and expose its horrors” trope: there is a much easier way to go about this, and it’s called “asking the actual mentally ill people who are already there.”

But see, we aren’t ~reliable~ enough, we could be mistaken, or lying, but nondisabled people are never mistaken or lying, and they can see everything that goes on in there, because they know all the things that disabled people know about living in institutions just from being there for a short period of time. 

(Seriously, even disabled people who are in there a short time for very routine things don’t always notice the horrors, how do they expect nondisabled people to?  It’s disabled people who are very devalued by an institution or who are staying longer than the average stay, whether that average stay is days or months, that get treated the worst generally.  Especially those of us who can’t help doing various things that annoy the staff.  Plus some of us are better able to pick up on why certain things are wrong, while others accept them because they don’t think they’re owed any better or they’ve come to see it as normal.)
