KPRC, a local news station in Houston, TX tweeted out a story about a 12-year-old natural beauty who was told by the private school in which she is enrolled to either cut her “wild” natural hair or face expulsion. As you can see from the photo above, I clearly had a problem with the way the tweet was worded.
There is no question that her hair is natural, but there is debate as to whether or not it is wild, meaning untamed. To many White-Americans, hair like hers, and like mine, is looked at as wild, untamed, unkempt, disheveled and in dire need of maintenance. They aren’t able to see that our choice to wear our hair naturally has NOTHING to do with societal norms, but everything to do with pride & acceptance of who we are. They don’t realize that it actually takes a LOT more to maintain natural Black hair, that Black females take the time to care for hair like this, and that when it is worn this way it’s because it was MEANT TO BE.
Just because her hair is NOT straight does NOT mean it isn’t TAMED. It isn’t WILD, it isn’t CRAZY, it isn’t something to be ashamed of or made to feel like it isn’t acceptable. It is NATURAL & got dammit it’s BEAUTIFUL!

it’s more than hair style
this child is suffering due to wearing her hair how it grows from her scalp and the racist that deem her natural hair, black, negro hair unacceptable.
so gather round white folks, you want to call your hair an afro so bad.
you want to wear dread locks so bad
you will never know the pain and stress of the losses you will take a black person with black people hair. Our babies are being expelled from school, we are having a jobs threatened, all the while white folks only want to claim the elements that they feel are “cool” for a few seconds while we, as a people suffer for being black 24/7.
