I read this in a GP support group:
“I cant take this pain, dr saying “gastroparesis is just a made up disease by people who wants attention”, and that the reason why i am in pain is bc i am ” depressed” these doctor need a computer shoved up their asses, maybe then they can research Gastroparesis and know how serious this REAL DISEASE IS!!!!!!!”
This is exactly why they need to do a lot more medical research on gastroparesis. And actually educate the doctors.
Wow that’s totally bizarre.
Like when I expect a doctor to say that something’s a made up disease by people who are seeking attention? I expect the disease to be:
1. Extremely well-known.
2. Extremely hard to test for, and thus frequently misdiagnosed.
3. Usually, extremely common.
4. Sometimes, but not always, the things doctors say that about are also quack diseases. As in, diseases that either don’t exist, or that quacks will tell you you have even if you don’t. Like for instance systemic candida. It exists, mainly in people with AIDS and other severe immunodeficiency. But quacks will tell everyone they have it, based on deliberate misinterpretation of laboratory tests. And they’ll say it’s causing your symptoms that are really caused by something entirely different. So doctors will get skeptical when people walk in and say they have that (even sometimes when they really do).
Like fibromyalgia or CFS. Not that either of those means you’re attention seeking, but it gets called that a lot because that’s what people do.
But saying that about gastroparesis is like saying that about Lesch Nyhan. They’re both uncommon. They both have fairly definitive tests. (As in, there’s a medical test you can do, and if that test is positive, then pretty much, you have it, period. Of course there are false negatives, but there aren’t that many false positives.) Nobody has heard of them. So they’re totally not the kind of things most doctors would say that about.
Not that I don’t believe it. Doctors, especially bad ones, say all kinds of bizarre crap. It’s just really weird that they’d say it about gastroparesis of all things.
