People pretend they’re not afraid, and they are.

They pretend that fear isn’t a part of it, because admitting that fear is any part of it, is admitting that they are imperfect.  And admitting imperfection is wrong, even though appearing to admit imperfection is the name of the game.

So people do what they think they’re supposed to do – they’re guided by the jolt of fear to the right, and to the left, to walk forward, but they don’t all, or even most, walk forward just because they want to, because they’ve thought about it and it’s the right thing to do.  There’s always the little jolt of fear that makes them walk forward, and then they paper it over in their mind with other feelings, the ones they’re supposed to be feeling, and then they forget they felt it.  Almost.
