It comes as a shock to many first year Hufflepuffs that they mayn’t visit the owlery every night to say goodnight to their bird.

They can and they do.

Some prefects (especially from other houses) try to convince them that they can’t, but what they really mean is that it’s ~not done~. But then they realize that it is right and do it anyway and that’s part of how they learn about what rules really are and aren’t and not always believing people when they tell you you can’t do a thing.
