Also for me and a lot of autistic people I’ve met, learning in general (both art stuff and not-art stuff) goes something like:

1.  Learn a little, be crap at it.

2.  Wait a long time doing absolutely nothing about it.

3.  Suddenly try the same thing again.

4.  Excel.

That’s how rumors of savantness happen.  (That’s probably why my records say idiot-savant qualities somewhere in there.)  Because somehow the way we learn involves doing a huge amount of the learning in a dormant period and then coming about well ahead of what we’d have expected;

Dormancy is an integral part of how I learn, mess with it at my peril.
