It’s okay to be super-interested in something without knowing everything about it.

You don’t have to know about kerning and ligature, or have ever heard of the words, or know what they mean, to really like fonts.  You don’t have to like the same fonts that font experts like, in order to really like fonts.  You don’t have to like fonts in the way that other pepe lie them n ore to like them.  You just have to like them.

Don’t let anyone tell you different.

Seriously.

This has plagued me my whole life.  There’s a few areas that I really like that I do have some amount of expertise in.  Just about everything else I really like, I don’t have expertise in.  And when I claim to really like it, and don’t have the expertise, i feel like I’ve failed some kind of test in what liking those things is.

But I haven’t.  And neither have you.

This includes autistic ‘special interests’.  No matter how much the 'experts’ think we have to have expertise in our special interests… they don’t even have enough expertise on us to notice that’s not true, so… yeah.
