I have had retail workers openly belittle me without fear of consequences before

I’ve had delivery people just fucking hang up on me for not being able to understand them

likewise

plus the looks you get when you can’t speak properly

I had a woman hang up on me when I laughed at a typo my keyboard made on the phone.  You know, laughed just like anyone else would when they made a mistake?

She flipped out at me and told me I was playing a prank on her, and then hung up on me when I told her by now I wasn’t laughing, I was crying.

I was so angry with her that I called a cab (this was back when I had a collapsible wheelchair that would fit in the back, and the store wasn’t very far from me) and went out to the store and fucking showed her that I was a disabled person using a keyboard to communicate.

She didn’t apologize.

She said “But how was I to know you were for real?”

I gave her the order for the book I was looking for, and then told her it was the last time, ever, that I would ever shop there.  Because the way she treated me was completely shitty and uncalled for.  Like.. most people who slipped up over a word would have a nervous laugh, I’m no different at all, you can’t decide someone is playing a prank on you just because they can’t talk.

This is why I try to take extra care with being patient with customers at work.
