Dolores Umbridge is one of my favorite villains.

Because “the world is not divided into good people and Death Eaters”.

And.

Because she’s the epitome of an attitude I used to call “staffish”.  As in, exactly like the absolute worst institutional-type staff I have ever, ever encountered.

And she’s so horrible that she made me want to throw things at her long before I discovered she tortured students (which totally did not come as a shock).

And she’s very, very lawful-evil.  Which doesn’t get represented as “as bad as” chaotic-evil for some reason.  Which is silly, considering how much more scope lawful-evil generally has for its powers.

Umbridge is such a plausible villain. I mean, I have never met a Voldemort but I have met people like Umbridge. Teachers, even.

Yeah I’ve never met a Voldemort, but I’ve met a couple Tom Riddles in my day. (So much so, that when they talked about Tom Riddle in the second book, he immediately called one of them to mind without me even realizing it.)  Becoming Voldemort put him a little too far over the top for reality.

No villain earns my visceral hatred quite like a lawful villain.
