 I'm going to express an academically unpopular and controversial opinion:

Non-Native people should not write about the history of indigenous gender and sexuality.

There is just way too much at stake. I say this having read the vast majority of work on gender and sexuality in historical Native America. Probably 98% of it is written by non-indigenous…

Especially given that most of the times I’ve seen other white people writing about this, it’s been white LGBT people writing about it in ways that serve white LGBT people, not Native people of any kind.
