Guys, while I finish Anne of Avonlea and await the arrival of Anne of the Island to read, I want to ask you AoGG fans something. Is it worth it going beyond the first three books of the series and read the other books?
YES. I personally loved the fourth and fifth books. The…
I found the last book in the series very illuminating, considering it is, I believe, the only (or first?) surviving book by a Canadian woman who lived through World War I, about Canadian women in World War I, and I get the feeling it’s fairly realistic. It deals with things you wouldn’t even believe, given the rest of the series, and given what the rest of the series was like, it gave me the best glimpse I’ve ever gotten of how that war completely overturned everything people knew. (Anne’s vivid imagination becomes… quite a liability, when her sons go to fight, and that’s all I’m saying. Also makes actual mention of lice. I respect the author for putting that fictional family through what really happened. And it gave me a lot of insight into ways of life I never understood before that.)

singersdd answered: Yes, I think so. Anne has some great adventures in ALL the books, even Rilla of Ingleside, which is about her youngest daughter.

dmdumouchel said: All the books in the Anne series are great, except for Anne of Ingleside. That book didn’t come from L. M. Montgomery’s creative impulse, her publisher pressured her into writing it. I would read all of the books except for that one.
forgingerpeople said: Sorry for the third reply haha, but I just remember that the first two chapters or so of Book 5 are wonderful and any Anne fan would want to read that little bit
forgingerpeople said: So basically, if you feel like it, I’d say skip 4 and 5, maybe read 6 to get a sense of where Anne’s at in her life, skip 7 then read 8. But that’s just my opinion. This series is my favorite and Books 4, 5, 6, and 7 just don’t do much for me.
forgingerpeople answered: As a longtime Anne fan, the first and third books are my faves. 4 and 5 are not the greatest, but I actually really love Book 8.
