boiyebrat asked: Would someone who has scoliosis (not visibly severe, but causes limitations in mobility and scale 4-7 pain on a day to day basis) be under the umbrella on this blog? I have tried reading into whether scoliosis is considered a disability, and most of it has led to a definite 'no'. If chronic pain isn't a disability, could anyone please help me understand how to identify? I don't wish to appropriate disabled pyople's experiences/narratives. Thank you!

into-the-weeds:

chronicfemmes:

we’re using chronic so that ppl with chronic health issues, chronic pain, and mental illness can participate without appropriating ‘disabled’

I can’t tell you how to identify, but a safe bet is: Can you collect disability? if yes->disabled if no ->spoonie/chronic illness. Either way: welcome here

…..chronic health issues, chronic pain, and mental illness are all definitely considered disability *by the disability community*.

Not everyone with those things considers themselves disabled, but identifying that way is NOT appropriative.

IN ADDITION, making whether or not someone can identify as disabled contingent on their ability to collect disability (which many, MANY disabled people cannot or do not want to do) is really, really fucked up, for reasons which I think should be pretty damn obvious, and makes me uncomfortable following this blog which, as a queer, multiply disabled girl, I was initially super excited about.

“APPROPRIATING DISABLED”?!?!

Are people serious?

Do people know what appropriation is?

Can people stop using it in ridiculous contexts?

Thank you.

And that’s not to mention the rest of it.
