From the ask box: On everything going wrong

I had a query from someone that I think ought to be answered publicly, as other folks might find it useful: but I don’t want to attach names to it — for all I know, the asker doesn’t want their name attached. Anyway, it’s this:

The last few months, nothing has seemed to go right. What do you do, when it seems like it’s never going to get better?

Well, the short answer is: I just keep going. It’s rarely fun, but it seems to work. (A note here: the following is all going to be quite subjective, so feel free to tl:dr out of it at any time.) :)

I’ve mentioned the “Law of Undulations” before. (The link has the detailed description of the concept: this formulation of it goes back to C. S. Lewis.) It’s been my experience in the past that sometimes these nothing-goes-right periods have to do with one aspect or another of this Law, especially in terms of one’s own perception of what’s going on around them.
